KIT FIT!

Look & Feel Like a Champion
It is so important to wear a judogi that fits properly as the advantages of having a made-to-measure kit (or even one that fits correctly!) can make or break a contest

The first time that I was made aware that there were minimum and maximum requirements for a judogi was in 1978. Most of the judogis of the time were worn rather on the large size and made quite an easy target for the 'grippers' of the day

My first tailored kit was made to the minimum requirements allowed and I remember my first impressions of it being more like a straight-jacket than a judo jacket. It had streamline sleeves; the cross-over curved to my body and didn't give an inch of material on the shoulders and back for any kind of gripping to stick. The lapels had a double thickness which was very hard to wrap your fingers round and although it was a little uncomfortable, it proved to be a most effective weapon in my quest for the European title.

In fact, the look on my East German opponent's face in the semi-finals when a number of his fingernails were left imbedded in my kit was priceless. This kit was working miracles. (of course, some outstanding technique had something to do with it as well !!) - I digress.

As the years progressed, the sizing requirements were changed considerably. First it was to enlarge the judogis almost to an extreme that was ridiculous. Would Paula Radcliffe run the Olympic marathon in size15 running shoes? As with everything, a balance is found and I'm glad to say we have reached a happy medium with competition kits. A happy medium that we must still use as our minimum requirements for fitting.

These measurements are there for a reason, use them to your advantage and take the time to get your judogi fitted properly. It really does make a difference. Besides looking good and feeling better, it is a tool and it's a very important part of your armoury. If used well it can make the difference between a Gold and a Silver.
